Castillo De San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Construction began in 1672 along the western shore of the Matanzas River in St. Augustine, Florida. The fort was designed by the Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza, and was ordered by the Governor Francisco de la Guerra y de la Vega after a destructive raid by an English privateer. That privateer was Robert Searles and he raided the area in 1668. Work on the fort was continued under the administration of Guerra’s successor, Manuel de Cendoya in 1671, however the first stone was not laid until 1672.

Over the many years the fort has changed names. In 1763 when Britain gained control of Florida it was renamed Fort St. Mark and in 1821, under the control of the US, the fort was named Fort Marion, in honor of American Revolutionary war hero Francis Marion. Spring forward to 1924 when the fort was declared a national monument and later in 1942 when the fort was given its original name, given by the Spanish, Castillo de San Marcos.

The Castillo is a masonry star fort made from a local stone called coquina, made up of ancient shells that have bonded together to form a stone similar to a limestone. Native American and Cuban laborers contracted the fort from coquina that was quarried from across the Matanzas Bay, on Anastasia Island. The construction began on October 2, 1672 and lasted a back breaking twenty-three (23) years, ending sometime in 1695.
