It is a stunning example of 20th century classical revival architecture, adapted to the Florida climate, and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Edward Porcher and his wife settled in the area in the late 1800s and began to grow citrus fruit. He became very successful and is credited with being the first grower to grade fruit for shipping. He also invented a machine to wash the fruit, and was a founder of the Indian River Orange Growers Association.
Construction on the house began in 1914 according to Mrs. Porcher’s designs. As an avid admirer of the game of Bridge, Mrs. Porcher had stones cut and placed in the front of the house to represent the suits of cards. The home was completed in late 1916. The City of Cocoa later obtained the home from the family in the early 1950s.
Today, portions of the original house built out of native coquina rock with ten bedrooms and four and one-half baths are either preserved or have been accurately restored. The staircase is made of gorgeous teakwood, the floor is oak, and the wainscoting and trim are made from cedar.
The Porcher House is open daily, Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with evenings and weekends reserved for special events. The second floor of the house is leased as office space to local businesses. The house can seat up to 85 with standing room for 125 guests. Historical tours are offered by appointment.
With beautiful riverfront views, a nearby bustling shopping center boasting over fifty unique shops, restaurants, antique malls, and galleries, and its rich, romantic character, the Porcher House should be one of your top choices for that next special occasion.
