Inside the Frank House: Photographing a 3D-Printed Airbnb in Melbourne, Florida
After photographing more than 1,000 short-term rental properties, I have had the opportunity to work with just about every style of vacation rental imaginable. I have photographed beachfront condos, luxury homes, family vacation rentals, investment properties, and unique homes designed to stand out in an increasingly competitive short-term rental market. Every property has something different to offer, but every once in a while, I walk into a home that immediately feels unlike anything I have photographed before.
The Frank House in Melbourne, Florida, was one of those properties.
What makes the Frank House so unusual is not simply its modern design or its location on Florida’s Space Coast. The home was 3D printed using construction technology developed by Apis Cor, a Melbourne-based company specializing in robotic 3D-printing systems for the construction industry. Instead of relying entirely on traditional masonry techniques, portions of the home’s walls were created by a robotic system that deposited construction material layer by layer.
Today, the finished home operates as a short-term rental, giving visitors the rare opportunity to spend a few nights inside a building created with technology that still feels futuristic to most people. When I had the opportunity to photograph the Frank House for its vacation-rental marketing, I knew the photography needed to accomplish more than simply documenting the rooms. The images needed to show potential guests what makes the home technologically interesting while still presenting it as a comfortable, inviting place to stay.
What Is the Frank House?
The Frank House is a modern vacation rental located in Melbourne, Florida, and is one of the most interesting properties I have photographed during my career in short-term rental photography. According to its Airbnb listing, the home is approximately 2,000 square feet and includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms, with each bedroom designed as a king suite. That layout makes the home particularly appealing for families or groups traveling together because guests can enjoy shared living areas without giving up privacy.
On paper, those features might sound similar to many other upscale vacation rentals, but the construction of the home is what sets it apart. Apis Cor develops robotic systems capable of printing structural walls directly on a construction site. The company’s technology uses a process similar in concept to traditional additive manufacturing, except instead of producing a small object from plastic, the equipment creates full-scale walls using construction material.
The result is immediately noticeable when you walk through the Frank House. The home’s walls include the layered texture associated with 3D-printed construction, and curved surfaces demonstrate some of the design flexibility the technology can provide. Those details become part of the architecture rather than something hidden completely behind conventional finishes.
For a photographer, that creates an interesting challenge. The home needed to look beautiful and inviting, but the images also needed to communicate what makes it different.
Photographing a 3D-Printed Vacation Rental
When photographing a traditional property, potential guests already have a general idea of what they are going to see. They understand what a block home looks like. They understand wood framing, drywall, tile floors, kitchens, and standard residential construction. A 3D-printed house is different because many potential guests have never been inside one and may not know exactly what the term means.
That meant the photography needed to help tell the story visually.
I wanted to capture the texture of the printed walls and the curved architectural details, but I did not want the images to make the property feel like an engineering demonstration or construction exhibit. At the end of the day, the Frank House is still somewhere people come to relax, spend time with friends or family, and enjoy their trip to Florida.
That balance influenced the way I photographed the home. Wider compositions were used to show the scale and layout of each room, while tighter photographs helped highlight the unusual construction details. The goal was to make the technology visible without allowing it to overwhelm the warmth and functionality of the living spaces.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing short-term rentals. Every property presents a slightly different story, and the photographer’s job is to determine how that story should be communicated to the guest.
Short-Term Rental Photography Is About More Than Rooms
Short-term rental photography is often treated as though it is the same as traditional real estate photography, but there is an important difference between the two.
When a home is being listed for sale, the photography primarily helps market the property as real estate. A buyer is trying to understand the floor plan, condition, features, location, and whether the house fits their long-term needs. With a short-term rental, the guest is evaluating something different. They are trying to imagine what it will feel like to spend several days there.
That changes the way I approach a vacation rental.
A potential guest wants to see the bedrooms, but they are also thinking about where they will relax after a day at the beach. They want to see whether the kitchen is large enough for their group. They want to know whether there is enough seating in the living room, what the outdoor areas look like, and whether the property feels clean, comfortable, and professionally maintained.
The photography should answer those questions without forcing the guest to search for the information.
For a property like the Frank House, the photographs also need to answer another question: What is it actually like to stay inside a 3D-printed home?
That is where professional photography becomes particularly valuable. Good images do more than document square footage. They help someone understand the experience.
What Makes the Frank House Such a Strong Short-Term Rental
One of the biggest challenges in the vacation rental industry is differentiation. Travelers searching Airbnb or VRBO may be comparing dozens of properties that offer similar numbers of bedrooms, bathrooms, and basic amenities. A successful listing needs something that captures attention and gives a guest a reason to remember it.
The Frank House already has an unusually strong marketing advantage because very few travelers have ever stayed inside a 3D-printed home.
That is the kind of feature people talk about. A guest can tell friends or family that they spent their vacation in a house built using robotic 3D-printing technology. It turns the accommodation itself into part of the travel experience.
That does not mean the technology alone is enough. The property still needs to be comfortable, functional, and visually appealing. The Frank House combines its unusual construction with a modern interior layout, private bedroom suites, and open common areas that make it practical for groups.
When photographing the property, I wanted the final gallery to communicate both sides of that experience. The home is innovative, but it is also somewhere guests can genuinely enjoy staying.
Why Professional Photography Matters for Airbnb and Vacation Rentals
A short-term rental listing may only have a few seconds to get someone’s attention.
When travelers search Airbnb, VRBO, or another booking platform, they are usually presented with multiple properties at once. In many cases, the first thing they see is the cover photograph. If that image catches their attention, they may open the listing and continue browsing. If it does not, they can move on almost instantly.
That makes photography one of the most important marketing tools available to a short-term rental owner.
Airbnb has reported measurable results associated with professional photography. In an analysis involving more than 14,700 listings during 2024 and 2025, Airbnb reported that properties using its Professional Photography program saw an average increase in host earnings and bookings during the following year compared with listings that did not use the service.
Photography is obviously not the only factor that affects the performance of a vacation rental. Pricing, reviews, amenities, location, availability, seasonality, and guest service all matter. However, photography controls one of the first impressions a traveler receives, and first impressions can determine whether someone ever reaches the rest of your listing.
A property owner can invest thousands of dollars in furnishings, upgrades, outdoor amenities, and interior design, but if those improvements are photographed poorly, many potential guests may never appreciate them.
The First Photos Need to Work Hard
The order of the images in a vacation rental listing is also important.
Airbnb places significant emphasis on the first photographs shown to potential guests, especially the cover image. These images should immediately communicate the strongest reasons someone would want to book the property.
For a beachfront home, that might mean leading with the ocean view. For a luxury vacation rental, it may be the pool or main living area. For the Frank House, the challenge was identifying photographs that immediately showed the home’s modern character while still giving people a sense that they were looking at something unusual.
A good vacation rental gallery should have a natural visual flow. It should introduce the property, establish the main living spaces, show the bedrooms and bathrooms clearly, highlight important amenities, and then include detail photographs that reinforce the personality of the home.
The photographer has to think beyond individual images. The complete gallery should function as a marketing presentation.
Airbnb-Certified and Vetted for Quality and Safety
At Biz360Tours, short-term rental photography is not simply an occasional service. It is an area I specialize in, and I have personally photographed more than 1,000 rental properties.
I am also an Airbnb-certified photographer who has been vetted for quality and safety. Airbnb’s professional photography program works with photographers who are evaluated for quality and trained to photograph vacation rentals in a way that aligns with the needs of the platform and its hosts.
That experience has given me a strong understanding of what makes short-term rental photography different from other types of architectural photography.
I know how important accurate room proportions are. I know when a wide-angle photograph helps communicate a space and when going too wide starts to make a room look misleading. I pay attention to amenities that may be important to guests but are easy to overlook, and I photograph the property with the final listing experience in mind.
Most importantly, I believe the photographs should make a property look its best without creating unrealistic expectations. A guest should arrive at a vacation rental and feel that the property looks as good as, or better than, it appeared online.
Experience Matters When Photographing Vacation Rentals
Photographing more than 1,000 rental properties has taught me that every host has invested in their property differently.
Some owners focus heavily on interior design. Others create impressive outdoor spaces. Some provide game rooms, coffee bars, home theaters, beach equipment, or family-friendly amenities. Others have a spectacular location and need photographs that properly show the relationship between the property and its surroundings.
A professional short-term rental photographer needs to recognize those strengths quickly.
That is particularly important because owners are often so familiar with their own properties that they overlook features a traveler may find valuable. Something as simple as a dedicated workspace, large dining table, private bathroom, outdoor shower, or well-equipped kitchen can influence whether a guest books a property.
The photographer should be looking for those details throughout the shoot.
With the Frank House, the defining feature was obvious from the beginning. The challenge was making sure the 3D-printed construction was not treated as a novelty at the expense of the actual guest experience.
The Frank House Fits Perfectly on Florida’s Space Coast
The Frank House also feels surprisingly appropriate for Melbourne.
Florida’s Space Coast has long been associated with science, engineering, aerospace, and technology. Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral have made the region internationally famous, while Melbourne itself has a strong technology and aerospace presence.
Apis Cor is based in Melbourne, which gives the Frank House an even stronger connection to the area. The technology behind the home was not simply imported from somewhere else and placed in Brevard County. It was developed by a company operating right here on the Space Coast.
That creates an interesting experience for visitors. Someone can travel to the area to watch a rocket launch, visit the beaches, explore Melbourne and Cocoa Beach, and then end the day by staying inside a house constructed with robotic 3D-printing technology.
It is difficult to imagine a property that fits the character of the Space Coast much better than that.
Every Vacation Rental Has Something Worth Showing
Most short-term rental owners will never have a property as unusual as the Frank House, and they do not need one.
You do not need 3D-printed walls to create a memorable listing.
Maybe your property has a beautiful swimming pool. Maybe it is within walking distance of the beach. Maybe the backyard overlooks the Indian River. Perhaps you have invested in exceptional interior design, a game room, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, or a large dining space designed for families.
Every successful rental has something that makes it valuable to the right guest.
The purpose of professional photography is to identify those features and make sure they are communicated clearly.
If you have invested money into creating a better guest experience, your photography should support that investment.
